Panama Canal project: Panama celebrates newly expanded canal as a patriotic milestone

Sunday saw Panama unveil its newly expanded canal, the biggest engineering feat of the 21st century so far.
But on Sunday, Panama put the conflict on hold to present its new project to the world.
A poster commemorating the opening of the expanded canal reads: “Together we did it.” R. M.“When the United States opened the Panama Canal in 1914, only a few Panamanians took part in that milestone.
Even Jimmy Carter, the American president who signed the 1977 treaty that returned control of the canal to Panama in 2000, was absent.
